I spent four years at Virginia Commonwealth University exploring every corner of Richmond. Week after week, I was discovering new restaurants, photo-worthy murals, and hidden gems in neighborhoods I’d never known existed. Exploring comes naturally to me, and Richmond was the perfect playground.
In that time the city has changed so much. The GRTC Pulse bus rapid-transit line now links Willow Lawn to Rockett’s Landing, giving Broad & Main a fresh pulse of activity and easing how we move around town. New parks, new breweries, and new vantage points across the river keep me excited about coming back.

When to Visit Richmond, VA
I personally love visiting in the spring (April through June) when the weather is warm but not sticky, flowers are in full bloom, and the outdoor patios start filling up again. It’s the perfect season to walk along the Canal Walk, explore Maymont, or grab brunch outside in Carytown without breaking a sweat.
Fall (September through November) is another amazing time to go for cool mornings, golden leaves along the James River, and just enough crispness in the air to make hiking or brewery hopping feel extra cozy. The humidity drops, the colors come alive, and the city feels calm but full of energy.
My favorite neighborhoods in Richmond, VA
Scott’s Addition
If you were to have only have one night in Richmond, spend it in Scott’s Addition. It’s hands down my favorite part of the city. You’ll find a mix of breweries, cideries, rooftop bars, and cozy spots to hang out with friends. The neighborhood has completely transformed over the years into one of the best places to spend an evening in Richmond, with local favorites like Vasen Brewing, The Veil, and Buskey Cider.
There’s also a movie theater, a bowling alley, and The Diamond baseball stadium all within walking distance. Scott’s Addition is the perfect blend of fun RVA charm.
Shockoe Bottom
If you’re looking for nightlife in Richmond, Shockoe Bottom is where you’ll end up. This historic district mixes old cobblestone streets with some of the city’s liveliest restaurants and bars. Grab coffee and pastries at The Whisk, pizza at Bottoms Up, or mojitos at Havana 59—all local favorites.
During the day, it’s great for exploring murals or walking the Canal Walk, and in the evenings it turns into one of the best areas in Richmond for dinner and drinks. Don’t miss Libby Hill Park nearby; it’s one of the city’s prettiest sunset views overlooking the skyline and James River.
Carytown
Colorful, quirky, and full of character; that’s Carytown in a nutshell. This stretch of Cary Street is lined with independent boutiques, vintage shops, and some of the best restaurants in Richmond VA. You can find everything from casual burger joints to fine dining spots and dessert cafés.

If you love modern design, art, and a good rooftop view, Quirk Hotel is the spot. It’s one of the most popular boutique hotels in Richmond VA, and for good reason. The whole place feels creative and bright: pink accents, local artwork, and a lobby that belongs in a magazine. Downstairs, there’s a cozy restaurant and café perfect for brunch or coffee meetings, and the rooftop bar is a must for golden hour cocktails with skyline views. Quirk has this effortless charm that fits Richmond’s artsy vibe perfectly.
Graduate Richmond is one of the coolest places to stay in the city. Inspired by the movie The Graduate, the whole space feels nostalgic and playful with bold colors, retro décor, and tons of character. It’s within walking distance of some of Richmond’s best restaurants and coffee shops, but honestly, you don’t even have to leave the hotel to have a good time. The rooftop bar and pool offer one of the best views of the city, especially at sunset.
If you’re looking for a stay that feels iconic to Richmond, The Jefferson Hotel is it. This historic hotel in downtown Richmond has been around since 1895, and every corner feels like a piece of art; marble staircases, grand chandeliers, and timeless Southern charm. The rooms are luxurious but still warm and welcoming, and the service honestly lives up to the reputation. You can dress up for dinner downstairs at Lemaire, then wander the lobby and feel like you’re stepping back in time; the Jefferson never disappoints.

If there’s one thing to know about me, it’s that I absolutely love food — especially when it comes to discovering local spots. Richmond has always had an incredible food scene, and while a few of my past favorites have closed since I last lived here, the city continues to reinvent itself with new restaurants, coffee shops, and hidden gems popping up all the time.
I definitely haven’t been to every place on the list below, but I’ve hit plenty that are worth sharing. Every spot on this list has something special, whether it’s comfort food that feels like home, a creative twist on Southern classics, or flavors that totally surprise you.

Then there’s Richbrau Brewing, a fun, laid-back spot where the beer’s good and the atmosphere is even better. One place that’s still doing it strong is The Tobacco Company Restaurant in Shockoe Slip; classic, historic, and still part restaurant/part club when things get going. On the other end, for something more dance-floor oriented you’ll find spots around downtown and Scott’s Addition where the music comes alive on weekends.

Best Day Trips from Richmond, VA
If you’re based in Richmond and looking to explore beyond the city, you’ve got some excellent doors that open to easy day trips. Charlottesville (just under two hours away) brings together the historic estate of Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, a charming University of Virginia campus, local wineries and the Blue Ridge foothills—all in one rich loop.
Then there’s Williamsburg (about an hour east of RVA), where you can wander through Colonial Williamsburg’s 18th-century streets, hit nearby Busch Gardens Williamsburg for thrills or stroll historic Jamestown for a full blend of fun + learning. And when you’re craving sand, sun and seafood, Virginia Beach (roughly two hours southeast) gives you the boardwalk, waves, and a coastal escape without leaving Virginia.
