Planning Your Eastern Sierra Road Trip
When planning your road trip through the Eastern Sierras in California, there are a few things to consider. First, it’s important to decide on a route, as there are multiple highways and roads that run through the region. Highway 395 is the main north-south route, while State Route 120 and State Route 108 are popular east-west routes.
There are plenty of lodging options ranging from campgrounds to hotels to resorts while you’re on your Eastern Sierra road trip; I’ll talk about some of my favorite spots later on.
Finally, it’s a good idea to plan ahead for food and supplies, because some areas of the Eastern Sierra are fairly remote and may not have many options for dining or shopping.
Best Time of Year to Visit
It’s important to take into consideration the time of year to plan your road trip, as some roads and attractions may be closed during the winter months due to snow. I’ve laid out some of the pros and cons of each season below:
- Spring: This is when you’ll be able to see the plants and flowers in full bloom. Depending on the year, there could still be a lot of slow in the region even in late Spring so be sure to check the weather prior to leaving.
- Summer: In the summer all the attractions are open and it’s a great time to find swimming holes. However, the summer does bring the largest crowds and the weather can be very hot.
- Fall: In the Fall the weather is usually in the perfect zone of not too hot or cold. Plus you get to see the area light up in beautiful shades of yellow and oranges.
- Winter: The benefit of visiting in the Winter is fewer crowds, and the waterfalls flow at their fullest. However, the downside is roads and locations are closed due to snow and ice, and it can get pretty cold in some areas

I recommend starting your Eastern Sierra road trip in Sacramento. Driving from there will reduce the amount of driving you’ll have to do to reach the Eastern Sierras. We flew into Sacramento, rented cars from the airport, and started our journey from there.
