The Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway is a breathtaking road in North Georgia that’s 40.6 miles long, and filled with scenic roadside pull-offs and stunning hikes. It’s like Georgia’s mini version of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
This scenic drive winds through the Chattahoochee National Forest and offers mountain views at almost every turn. It provides plenty of opportunities to hop out of the car, pause, and take a moment to enjoy nature. And if the roadside views aren’t enough, there are plenty of hikes along the way to get your adventures in.
Whether you’re a nature lover, into photography, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway promises an unforgettable journey through the heart of North Georgia.
How to get to Russell Brasstown Scenic Byway
Start in Blairsville, Georgia, and work your way down to Helen to get the most out of your day (the map below highlights this route).
From Blairsville, head south on U.S. Highway 129. This road will take you through the beautiful Chattahoochee National Forest, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests.
To get to Blairsville from Atlanta, head North on I-75, then hop on to I-575 N/GA-5, and continue straight onto US-76. From there, you’ll turn left onto Blue Ridge St and take it straight into downtown Blairesville.
To get to Blairsville from Asheville, you’ll want to find your way onto I-40 and take this road to US-74 toward US-19. Then you’ll take US-23 S towards US-441, and hop on to NC-69 S. After that, you’ll take US-76 right into Blairesville.

Stunning Spots on Russell Brasstown Scenic Byway
1) Helton Creek Falls
This trail is my go-to when introducing people to the North Georgia Mountains. Simply because it has the perfect combo of scenic views, it’s beginner-friendly, and short in distance- basically, it’s a win for the whole fam. Helton Creek features upper and lower falls that are both spectacular.
A set of wooden stairs will guide you down to the lower falls, where the water spills into a cute tiny pool. It’s an excellent spot for families with toddlers because the water’s usually pretty shallow, perfect for the kiddos to get their splash on.
As you continue up the trail to the upper falls, you will be greeted with a platform overlooking the waterfall, and at the bottom there’s a much bigger pool. Deep enough to jump in and have a proper swim session. It’s the kind of hike that ticks all the boxes for a day of family fun in the Georgia mountains.
Insider Tip: The ground near the waterfall is filled with tiny rocks, so be sure to bring your water shoes! This is my favorite pair for water adventures.

2) Desoto Falls
Desoto Falls is actually a duo – upper and lower – each with its own unique charm. You’ll reach the lower falls first as it’s only 0.3 miles into the hike.
The rumbling sound of cascading water and the lush greenery create a serene ambiance that’s hard to resist. It’s a bit of a hike to reach some of the falls, but trust me, the views are totally worth it.
3) Hogpen Gap
Hogpen Gap is a roadside pull-off with ample parking spots and a couple of picnic tables to enjoy the view. I mean, who can resist the idea of a picnic with a backdrop this beautiful? If you add this stop to your itinerary, be sure to bring your lunch along.
Insider Tip: If you love drone photography, this is the best spot along the Russell Brasstown Scenic Byway to get incredible shots of the mountain views!
4) Raven Cliff Falls
So many incredible places in North Georgia have taken me by surprise, and this one was no different. Raven Cliff Falls is a beautiful trail that features a waterfall flowing between a cliff- it’s a must-see.
The hike to Raven Cliff Falls is 5 miles round trip and rated as moderate as you’ll gain 692 feet in elevation. You’ll encounter multiple bridges and will see multiple waterfalls on your way to the trail. Making this hike very scenic and worth it.
Pro Tip: At the beginning of the trail you will have to cross a log over the river. It’s very double but you want to make sure you bring along sturdy shoes! If you need a recommendation, my favorite hiking boots are the Merrell Moab 3’s.

5) Dukes Creek Falls
Dukes Creek Falls is a moderate 2 mile round trip hike down to the platform featuring an array of waterfalls. The trail follows along the creek and offers a peaceful ambiance as you walk the trail.
6) Smithgall Woods State Park
The cool waters of Dukes Creek wind their way through the park, giving fly fishing enthusiasts the opportunity to reel in some trout.
Hiking trails meander through the woods, offering both seasoned hikers and casual strollers a chance to soak in the scenic beauty. If you’re a birdwatcher, you’re in for a treat with the diverse avian residents. The park also has some cozy cottages if you’re up for a weekend getaway.

7) Helen
Known as the Bavarian town, Helen, is a must see town. It’s located at the end of the Scenic Byway and is the perfect place to end your trip. The Chattahoochee River flows through the heart of the town, offering opportunities for tubing, kayaking, and fishing.
You can explore the vibrant local arts scene, indulge in delicious Bavarian cuisine, and shop for handmade crafts and souvenirs. Not to mention the most popular attraction is the mountain coaster. The town hosts various festivals throughout the year, with the most popular being celebrating Oktoberfest.

Anna Ruby Falls
Anna Ruby Falls is a beautiful double waterfall located 15 minutes from the Russell Brasstown Scenic Byway. The trail is 0.9 miles and fully paved making it a great option for families with strollers.

Vogel State Park
As one of Georgia’s most popular state parks, Vogel is beautiful any time of year. The centerpiece is Lake Trahlyta, perfect for lazy afternoons of fishing or paddling on a canoe. The park has a stunning waterfall trail called Trahlyta Falls, which is 1-mile round trip.
If you’re into camping, Vogel’s got you covered with cozy campsites and even some rustic cabins for those who prefer a touch of comfort. In the fall, the foliage puts on a show that’s straight out of a postcard!
Yonah Mountain
If you’re looking for a challenging hike with a rewarding view, Yonah Mountain is for you. The trails is 4.5 miles round trip and is a constant uphill battle to the top. You will gain over 1400 feet in elevation, and your legs will feel it.
The view at the top, offering 360-degree views of the mountains, makes it all worth it. It’s breathtaking at sunset!

Blood Mountain
The trail is famous for backpackers and day hikers who come to enjoy the peaceful views at the top.
It is a gradual steep 4.5 mile hike up to the summit filled with many switchbacks that leads to rewarding views overlooking the North Georgia mountains.
During this hike you will gain a little over 1,400 feet in elevation gain, giving you a nice workout to reach the top. The trail is covered by the trees to protect you from the hot sun. The parking here is very limited so try to arrive to the trailhead early, especially on weekends.
