Winter is the perfect time to trade Atlanta’s busy streets for a little winter adventure. Whether you enjoy cozy mountain towns like Gatlinburg or Helen, or the coast, I love that in Atlanta, there’s something close by for everyone. You’re only hours away from breathtaking hikes and relaxing hot tubs, or historic downtowns and incredible food scenes. I’m going to show you some of the best winter weekend getaways within a short drive from Atlanta.
1. Blue Ridge, Georgia
If you’re looking for the perfect winter weekend getaway from Atlanta, Blue Ridge, Georgia, has to be on your list. Just a 90-minute drive from the city, this mountain town is a favorite! Blue Ridge has many fun things to do, from adventure activities to cabins with crazy views to relax in. It’s the perfect place for a quick escape!
Downtown Blue Ridge during the winter is beautiful! You’ll get string lights, boutique shops, and cozy cafés that are perfect for sipping on a hot chocolate or cider. And in Blue Ridge, you have to get the full experience by hopping on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. The winter views from the train are stunning, and it’s a unique way to take in the beauty of the mountains.
For the adventure seekers, there’s plenty to do. Hiking trails in the Aska Adventure Area, like Fall Branch Falls or Long Creek Falls are perfect this time of year. The waterfalls during this time of year are full flow, making it the perfect time to grab your photos!
Then, after a day of exploring, nothing beats heading back to a cozy cabin. Blue Ridge is known for its luxe mountain cabins with all the perfect touches—fireplaces, hot tubs, and amazing mountain views.

2. Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville, North Carolina, is one of my favorite places for a weekend winter getaway from Atlanta. The mountain scenery and the vibe in general is so fun! It is a year-round destination, but in the winter, it really shows off its artsy vibe and festive atmosphere.
Downtown Asheville is a winter wonderland all on its own. The streets are lined with twinkling lights, and the local shops are perfect for finding unique gifts or treats for yourself. And, there are so many craft breweries in Asheville (hence why it’s famous for them!) to choose from.
Of course, you’ve got to visit the Biltmore Estate. They go all out for the holidays and it’s an experience you won’t forget. Even after the season, the estate’s sprawling grounds are stunning in the winter light.
The Blue Ridge Parkway offers breathtaking views perfect for a scenic drive, or there are plenty of trails for hiking too. Craggy Gardens and Frying Pan Fire Tower are favorites that are beautiful any time of year. And there’s always winter waterfall chasing that’s worth the adventure.
Now, Asheville’s food scene … is unmatched! From farm-to-table restaurants to delicious diners, you’ll find something to satisfy every craving. Then, you can head back to your cabin, sit by the fire or relax in a hot tub with mountain views, and enjoy the serenity of Asheville. And trust me, Asheville has some really nice cabins and glamping accommodations!
3. Savannah, Georgia
Savannah’s mild weather makes it a great weekend winter getaway from Atlanta if you’re looking to stay away from the colder temps of the winter. I mean who likes being cold, right? About four hours from the city, Savannah is the place where you can find rich history and Southern hospitality.
The heart of Savannah is its historic district. One of the best things to do is simply explore the historic district. The oak trees draped with Spanish moss, cobblestone streets, and squares decorated with lights could just take your breath away.
Forsyth Park is a must-visit for the iconic fountain where everyone seems to find the perfect photo-op. If you’re into architecture, take a walking tour or hop on a trolley to soak in the history of Savannah’s antebellum homes and landmarks.
Savannah’s holiday season events can be found during most of the winter season. Check out light displays around the city or visit the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist for its stunning interiors and seasonal décor.
You can even plan a trip to Tybee Island, just 20 minutes away, where you can enjoy quiet beaches and maybe even spot dolphins along the shore. And don’t skip the food scene! From shrimp and grits to fresh seafood and sweet pralines, Savannah is a foodie’s dream.
4. Hot Springs, North Carolina
Want a mix of colder winter temps, but access to a nice warm hot springs? Then Hot Springs, North Carolina is the winter weekend getaway you are looking for! Known for its therapeutic hot springs, peaceful surroundings, and only about a four-hour drive from Atlanta, this mountain town offers a peaceful escape with plenty of natural beauty.
The mineral springs at Hot Springs Resort & Spa are a must-do for any visit. Imagine soaking in a private outdoor tub filled with warm, healing mineral water, surrounded by mountain views and the crisp winter air. I probably wouldn’t leave, haha! The tubs sit right along the French Broad River, so you can relax to the sound of the flowing water while enjoying the peace and quiet.
The Appalachian Trail runs right through Hot Springs, NC, offering plenty of winter hiking options. Max Patch, a nearby mountain bald, is a quick drive away and offers panoramic views of the mountains. The trails are quieter in the colder months, giving you a chance to truly connect with nature.
Hot Springs, North Carolina, may be a small town, but its food scene is packed! They’ve got cozy cafés serving up fresh, locally sourced meals and classic Southern comfort food. Many of the restaurants embrace the local vibe, making it easy to enjoy a good meal with friendly service.
As for where to stay, the cabins in Hot Springs are perfect for a winter weekend retreat. There are cabins perfect for small groups or for large families that give you the sense of luxury that you need to enjoy your getaway.
5. Helen, Georgia
Another winter weekend getaway that is probably the #1 spot in GA to visit during the winter, is Helen, Georgia. Just 1.5 hours from Atlanta, this charming Bavarian-style town in the North Georgia mountains transforms into a cozy winter wonderland. With its alpine architecture, festive atmosphere, and stunning mountain scenery, Helen offers a unique escape without the long drive.
Walking through downtown Helen feels like exploring a little European village. The streets are lined with colorful Bavarian-style buildings for boutique shops, bakeries, and restaurants. The town stays lined with string lights and seasonal decor, making it perfect for an evening stroll.
Unicoi State Park is just a few minutes away and offers winter-friendly hiking trails, a lake, zip-lining, and cabin rentals. Anna Ruby Falls is a must-see and an easy hike for all skill levels. The nearby Chattahoochee River is a great spot for kayaking or fishing, even in the colder months.
Helen also has a variety of cozy cabins and lodges perfect for a winter retreat. Many come with hot tubs, fireplaces, and mountain views, giving you the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring.
Pro Tip: Shop for unique gifts at the Christkindlmarkt (if visiting during the holiday season).
6. Chattanooga, Tennessee
Chattanooga, Tennessee, offers the perfect weekend winter getaway from Atlanta, and isn’t too far from the city either. Only about a two-hour drive from Atlanta, this scenic city has something for everyone from outdoorsy people to my foodies and art lovers.
You can spend your day walking the scenic Riverwalk, in the Bluff View Art District shops, or at the Tennessee Aquarium. And Chattanooga is known for the Walnut Street Bridge. It’s a pedestrian-only spot with beautiful views of the river and city skyline, especially at sunset.
Chattanooga is really well known for its outdoor scenery, especially with its main attraction, Lookout Mountain. Packed with spots like Rock City, Ruby Falls (an incredible underground waterfall), and the Incline Railway offering stunning winter views of the surrounding mountains, how could you miss it?
Sunset Rock and Signal Mountain offer gorgeous scenery and are especially peaceful in the winter.
Chattanooga has plenty of cozy options to stay in, from stylish downtown hotels to mountain cabins with fireplaces and views. After a day of exploring, grab a craft beer from one of the city’s many breweries or a delicious meal from a local farm-to-table restaurant.
Pro Tip: For the winter holiday season, make sure you add Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights to your itinerary for a magical holiday display.

7. Highlands, North Carolina
Highlands, North Carolina, is just about three hours from Atlanta, and it is a peaceful retreat spot from the busyness of the city. With its cozy downtown, stunning natural scenery, and slower pace, the Highlands is the perfect weekend winter getaway from Atlanta for a full reset.
The downtown area has boutique shops, art galleries, and gourmet restaurants that really embrace that small town feel. Highlands is also known for its incredible culinary scene, with award-winning restaurants that blend Southern flavors with fine dining.
The natural beauty of Highlands truly shines in the winter. You’re surrounded by hiking trails and waterfalls that are magical this time of year. Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are iconic spots that are easy to access and breathtaking in any season. Whiteside Mountain offers a more moderately challenging hike that leads to panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
When it’s time to settle in, Highlands has a range of cozy accommodations to choose from. You can find anything from mountain inns, to resorts with spa amenities, or even private cabins to relax in with a good book and a glass of wine.
8. Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston, South Carolina blends Southern charm, coastal beauty, and a touch of history, and is a perfect weekend winter getaway from Atlanta. Just about a five-hour drive away, Charleston offers mild winter weather and plenty of ways to explore.
Downtown Charleston is a dream in the winter. The cobblestone streets, pastel-colored row houses, and historic landmarks like Rainbow Row and The Battery, are better than any photo. For more scenery, visit the beautiful gardens at Middleton Place or Magnolia Plantation, or catch the sunset over the harbor!
Charleston’s food scene is legendary, and winter is the perfect time to savor it. Warm up with a bowl of she-crab soup, grab fresh seafood like Lowcountry oysters, or enjoy a classic Southern dish at one of the city’s many famous restaurants.
And to truly get that getaway feel during winter, head to Folly Beach or Sullivan’s Island. The beaches are quiet and peaceful in the winter, perfect for a long walk or just enjoying the salty breeze.
9. Dahlonega, Georgia
Known for its Old Fashioned Christmas celebration, Dahlonega is a charming winter destination. Just over an hour’s drive north of the city, this small mountain town is famous for its gold rush history, scenic beauty, and warm hospitality.
Downtown Dahlonega’s historic square is decked out with holiday lights and decorations. The shops are filled with unique finds and seasonal festivities during the winter months. It’s so nice walking around the galleries, boutiques, and cafés that make this little town so special.
Dahlonega is also a gateway to the North Georgia mountains. You can explore nearby trails like Preacher’s Rock for breathtaking winter views or visit Amicalola Falls, one of Georgia’s most stunning waterfalls. The cooler weather makes hiking more comfortable, and the crisp mountain air adds a refreshing touch to every adventure.
Wine lovers will also appreciate the area’s many vineyards and tasting rooms. Wineries like Wolf Mountain and Montaluce offer gorgeous views and delicious pours, perfect for a cozy winter afternoon.
From historic inns and B&Bs to charming cabins tucked into the woods, the unique stays in Dahlonega don’t miss. I mean, imagine ending your day by the fire with a glass of wine or waking up to the beauty of the mountains. Like what?!
10. Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Probably my favorite weekend winter getaway, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is the perfect destination. Next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park about 3.5 hours from Atlanta, this city transforms into a winter wonderland during the winter months.
The downtown area is lively and festive in the winter, especially during the holidays. Twinkling lights line the streets, and the shops, restaurants, and attractions give off a charming mountain-town vibe. You can check out the shops or grab some homemade fudge along the Parkway. The Gatlinburg Space Needle is also good for panoramic views of the Smokies.
Winter also means Ober Gatlinburg is in full swing! You can enjoy skiing, snow tubing, or just taking the scenic aerial tramway to soak in the views. Or, you can take a ride on the Gatlinburg Skylift and enjoy the views from the Skybridge!
Obviously, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a must (since its my most favorite place in the world, lol). Winter hikes like Laurel Falls or Alum Cave Trail offer stunning scenery with fewer crowds.
Gatlinburg has plenty of cozy cabin rentals and mountain lodges to choose from. That with a hearty meal from one of Gatlinburg’s local restaurants serving smoky barbecue, fresh trout, or classic Southern comfort food? Amazing!
11. Pensacola, Florida
Pensacola, Florida, is the perfect coastal winter weekend getaway from Atlanta. Just about a five-hour drive south, the beaches in Pensacola are stunning year-round, and winter is no exception. The sugar-white sand and emerald-green water create a peaceful setting perfect for long walks or just soaking in the views.
Gulf Islands National Seashore is a must-visit, with miles of unspoiled coastline and nature trails to explore. And if you’re into fishing, winter charters offer a chance to reel in some of the Gulf’s seasonal catches.
Pensacola’s historic downtown offers plenty to do, boutique shops, art galleries, and restaurants serving fresh seafood and Southern-inspired dishes.
Head to Palafox Street to explore, or visit the Pensacola Historic Village to learn about the city’s rich history. If you’re a fan of aviation, the National Naval Aviation Museum is a must-see and a great indoor option.
12. Brevard, North Carolina
Brevard, North Carolina is a fun mountain town, perfect for a winter weekend getaway with mountain beauty and outdoor adventure. Located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is often called the “Land of Waterfalls” for its stunning collection of cascades.
Brevard’s downtown is the perfect place to kick off your visit. There are boutique shops, galleries, and cozy cafés that invite you to slow down and soak in the charm. The town also has a thriving arts scene, so you might find some live music or creative art exhibits.
Pisgah National Forest surrounds the area, offering miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and even peaceful winter strolls. The waterfalls here are a must-see. Spots like Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock are particularly beautiful when covered by frost or icicles.
You can also spend time on the Blue Ridge Parkway and take in the panoramic views of the mountain peaks.
In Brevard, you’ll find mountain cabins and boutique inns that are perfect for warming up after a day of exploring.
