If you’re planning a trip to Savannah and trying to figure out where to stay, this will make it simple.
Savannah is one of those cities where location really matters. You can either be right in the middle of everything… or end up Ubering more than you want. Or you could be going for a more nature forward trip, versus being in the middle of the city.
So instead of just listing random hotels, I broke it down by area so you can pick what fits your trip best.
River Street (Best for views + location)

Photos courtesy of Booking.com
If it’s your first time in Savannah, this is one of the easiest places to stay. River Street sits right along the water with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and a constant flow of people. You’ll be surrounded by restaurants, bars, and little shops, and it’s one of the easiest places to just step outside and have something to do.
It can be a little busier and louder here, but that just comes with the territory. I’d say this is the best place to stay in Savannah, GA for first time visitors.
Hotels to check out:
- River Street Inn – historic feel with exposed brick and river views
- Olde Harbour Inn – spacious suites + wine and cheese hour
- Homewood Suites Savannah Riverfront – solid, reliable option with a rooftop pool
If you want something a little more elevated:
- The Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront – rooftop bar + boutique feel
- Cotton Sail Hotel – great location + rooftop views
- Thompson Savannah – modern, luxury, slightly quieter side of downtown

North Historic District (Best overall location)

This is honestly my favorite area to recommend. The North Historic District puts you right in the middle of Savannah’s iconic squares, walkable streets, and some of the best restaurants in the city. You’re still just a short walk to River Street, but it feels a little more relaxed and less crowded.
Perfect if you want to explore the city without being in the middle of the crowds.
Hotels to check out:
- East Bay Inn – cozy, historic, super walkable
- The Grant by Black Swan – apartment-style stays with more space
- Hotel Indigo Savannah Historic District – colorful, modern vibe
If you want boutique + aesthetic:
- The Drayton Hotel – rooftop dining + great location
- Kimpton Brice Hotel – stylish with a courtyard pool
- The Marshall House – classic Savannah charm + history
South Historic District (Near Forsyth Park)

Photos courtesy of Booking.com
This area feels a little more calm and residential, but still really beautiful.
Being near Forsyth Park means you’ll have easy access to one of the most recognizable spots in the city; wide open green space, walking paths, and that iconic fountain. It’s perfect for slow mornings, picnics, or just taking a break from being out all day. You’re near Forsyth Park, which is one of the prettiest spots in the city, and the area just feels more peaceful overall.
Hotels to check out:
- Perry Lane Hotel – one of the best stays in the city (rooftop + design)
- Bellwether House – boutique, more intimate experience
- Hamilton-Turner Inn – historic mansion feel
- The DeSoto – classic stay with rooftop pool
Victorian Historic District (Best for a cozy stay)
This area is a little more low-key and residential.
The Victorian District is just outside the main tourist areas, so it feels more residential and quiet. You’ll see a lot of historic homes, bed-and-breakfasts, and tree-lined streets that give you that classic Savannah look.
Hotels to check out:
- The Gastonian – one of the top-rated B&Bs
- Amethyst Garden Inn – cozy, charming, and more budget-friendly
Starland District (Best for trendy + local vibe)
If you want something a little different from the typical Savannah stay, look here.
The Starland District has a more local, creative energy with coffee shops, art spaces, boutiques, and newer restaurants. It’s not as polished as the Historic District, but that’s kind of the appeal.
If you’ve already been to Savannah before or want something different from the typical tourist experience, this is a great area to check out.
Hotel to check out:
- Hotel Bardo – one of the trendiest stays right now
Tybee Island (Best for beach + city combo)
Tybee Island is about 25 minutes from downtown Savannah, but it feels completely different.
This is where you go if you want beach time mixed into your trip. Think ocean views, slower mornings, and a much more laid-back pace. It’s less about walking to attractions and more about relaxing, being outside, and enjoying the water.
A lot of people will split their stay between Savannah and Tybee if they want both experiences.
Hotels to check out:
- Hotel Tybee – classic beachfront stay
- DeSoto Beach Hotel – oceanfront with private beach access
- The Georgianne Inn – colorful, laid-back feel
